Starcraft 2 Units Guide - What You Need To Know About Units For The Protoss, Zerg And Terran Race

Posted on: September 3, 2011

Looking for a Starcraft 2 Units Guide?  I'll go over a bunch of the Starcraft 2 units here, and let you know how to get each (By what race has access to them.)

First of all there are three races: Terran, Zerg, and Protoss.  You can look out for more races in upcoming expansions but for now that's what there is for you.

Each race has different options & limitations, so in this Starcraft 2 units guide we'll get a feel as to who gets what units.

Before we start, I would like you to know that at the end of this article, you'll find a secret that you need to know of so you can easily master and dominate Starcraft 2 with ease...

Here's The Protoss Units

Archon: Created by putting together, or merging, two templar units.  Archons are very powerful melee units with a great shield and a very powerful energy-based attack.

Carrier: A powerful unit that's in the air.  Carriers can't attack on their own, but the interceptors are created to fight for them (And shoot the carrier's target.)

Colossus: A big quad-legged vehicle that shoots a bunch of lasers in a splash form, which basically makes it fantastic for destroying bunches and flocks of smaller units.  They are very huge, and can get from point A to point B quickly, usually ignoring the terrain that it's on.

Dark templar: A stealthed warrior

High templar: A very fragile unit with strong psychic powers (Think of a "glass cannon" sort of thing)

Immortal: A walker  that has a very strong defense against powerful attacks, however, it is very weak to weaker attacks.  Funny, but that's how it works.

Mothership: A big and powerful unit that flies and consumes a lot of resources to create, but has extremely powerful special abilities.

Observer: A cloaking unit that's in the air, which "observes" and "detects" things.

Phoenix: A fighter that's in the air with some anti-gravity abilities that help to lift ground units into the air.

Probe: A builder for the Protoss.  They gather gas & minerals from around the terrain.

Sentry: A small ground support unit.

Stalker: A Dark Templar unit that can teleport short distances in front of it, and can attack from range to destroy air or ground units.

Void Ray: It was known as a warp ray before, and can deal damage from the air in a blue beam of energy that does more damage as it focuses on its target.  It's really good against big and heavy armored targets like buildings and huge units.  Pretty bad against smaller things.

Warp prism: Previously known as a phase prism, the warp is a unit that has two purposes.  It can transport units.

Zealout: A ground unit that can charge their enemy, allowing them to catch up very quickly.

Here's a List of the Terran Units

Banshee:  A unit that can cloak and only attack ground units.

Battlecruiser: The flagship of terran fleets, shoots a giant cannon that does great damage to single targets at a time.

Ghost: A specialist that deals with stealth.  They have access to some really powerful abilities.

Hellion: A quick vehicle that has a flamethrower attached, which helps to destroy tons of smaller units that are bunched together.

Marauder: Slows enemies with its attacks and deals a lot of damage against highly armored targets.

Marine: Regular terran infantry that have a shield.

Medivac dropship: Capable of transporting smaller ground & healing units.  Formerly known as dropship & medic (Now merged)

MULE: A unit that the orbital command can bring to harvest minerals for a set amount of time.

Raven: An air detector that makes small munitions.

Reaper: Extremely quick infantry that have dual pistols equipped.  Can explode buildings and has a jetpack to navigate.

SCV: A builder & resource gatherer.

Siege tank / crucio: A tank for the Terran that can turn into a non-mobile stationary cannon.  When you turn it into the cannon mode it can shoot from a very long range.

Thor: Does splash damage to air units and shoots huge cannons to ground enemies.

Viking: Can switch between spacecrafts and walking robots.

Here's a List of the Zerg Units

Corruptor: Can corrupt / attack other air units and will increase their damage taken.

Blood lord: Evolving from a corruptor, it has a ton of hit points and is a nice ground attacker.

Drone: Can harvest minerals and create structures, but is sacrificed when the structures are created.

Hydralisk: Ranged attacker from the swarms of Zerg.

Infestor: A spellcaster that acts as ground support and can navigate while burrowed.

Larva: Larvas will mutitate into other breeds.  You could call it the "core" of the Zerg.

Mutalisk: Very basic unit that attacks in the air, (air unit,) and has a high movement speed.

Overlord: Creates control and is NOT a detector anymore like the previous starcraft game.

Overseer: While working as a detector the Overseer it has a lot of special attacks, and is evolved from the Overlord.  Overseers are spellcasters.

Queen: A powerful ground unit that is great for defense play.

Roach: Very resilient short-ranged unit that is able to regenerate rapidly and can move while it is burrowed.

Ultralisk: A huge melee attacker that does a lot of "splash damage" with their attack.  Can also headbut buildings which is quite powerful.

Zergling: Very quick but weak attach that is great for swarms of Zerglings to attack in numbers.

Baneling: Mutated from the Zergling, and suicides (or dies when attacking.)
